Infusion therapy is when medication is administered through a needle or catheter. Most commonly, infusion therapy refers to medications administered intravenously (IV) (into the vein), but it can also be used when medications are provided through other non oral routes including subcutaneously (under the skin), intramuscularly (into the muscle), respiratory inhalation (into the lungs), epidurally (spinal routes), enterally, or through feeding tubes.

Infusion therapy is generally prescribed by a physician when a patient’s condition is so severe that it cannot be treated by oral medications. 

Traditionally these therapies are given in a hospital or clinic setting, but advancements in the clinical administration of these therapies have allowed for life saving treatments to be given safely and effectively in the home. Home infusion has been proven to be a safe and effective alternative to the inpatient setting for many therapies. Receiving these therapies at home give many patients the opportunity to resume a normal lifestyle and daily activities.
